2 Desks are better than 1

This was a happy reason for a small redo of our office. The 'ol blog is getting bigger (a big thank you to all of our readers!) I needed a place to deal with bloggy stuff (emails, writing, researching, sponsors, moodboards etc . . .). Before I would just use Lee's desk during the day while he was at work, but from time to time Lee is able to work from home, and if he tackles a bit of work in the evening I would be relegated to the sofa or the dining room table. The solution was a simple $75 desk from Ikea (found here). Actually it cost us two $75 desks, but we were able to sell our old desk for $75 (even steven).

Now we are able to work in the office together, it's really nice! It's more than really nice, it's the best situation for working. We are able to talk while we research, we are able to play footsies under the table . . . just kidding.
It also gives me a chance to use my favorite chair, I didn't want a 'desk chair' like Lee's, but I did want a black chair so it nods to Lee's without matching.
We added a couple of Ekby brackets and shelves to the desk, I thought it gave more definition, and more of a cubicle feel. haha I like that I have an extra shelf to hold books I am using as reference for a post, or a cup of tea.

I added a desk pad (also from Ikea, apparently it was an ikea sort of day), I also grabbed some $5.99 fabric and cut it to size under the desk pad. It's pretty! ;)
This weekend we added a couple of drawer units, also from Ikea. They are the Micke Drawer units, they have three shallow drawers and one deep drawer for files. They have been the most useful thing we've bought for the house! ;) I'll share in another post how we organized them all, but even just this weekend they've been so great.
We are so happy with how our office for two is coming along. We still have the rolling ladder to add to the bookcases,
but we are making some serious progress in the office, with the addition of our new bird cage for Carson, our new bookshelves and now our desks!!!

What do you prefer, a quiet office for one or a busy office for two??

  2. We just bought a new two sided desk setup for our studio, I'm still working out getting it organized right, but I much prefer how yours looks. Hopefully it will look at least half as amazing as yours when I get done!

  3. My husband has a large desk (he is a flat surface abuser, LOL), and I have an armoire that I converted to my desk. Our 7 yr old uses my sewing desk in the same room for his notebook. The 3 of us all get our work done at the same time. Ok, truthfully, my son is playing games while I am shopping and my husband is working.

  9. how nice!! I like the IDEA of working with my husband in the room, but that man(as much as I truly do LOVE him) is a loud, messy fella.

  13. For a little room this has had a lot of changes since you moved in but I love how if you do something and it works for a while and then doesn't it's nothing for you to change it. Nothing is set in stone and has to work as well as look pretty for your blog. You go girl...looking forward to seeing the birdie cage. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

  15. Great idea to put the desks facing each other! I think Ikea has the best desk options for the money. I love your blog and have really enjoyed reading it over the last year or so!

  17. I absolutely love the changes you've made here! I have one suggestion that could really balance the bookcase area...think about adding some molding to the vertical sides of the windows extending up to the bookcase above it. I think that would really create a built in look and not make the bookcase seem like its hovering over the windows.
I've never left a comment on a blog before, but I felt compelled to here because your space is just so beautiful and inspiring...

Looks great! curious about how you plug in the lamp on the desk? do you have an outlet in the floor? or do you run the cord and hide it? Can't wait to see the finished bookcase ladder!!!!

If possible can you do the post about the Micke Drawer units soon? :) I was thinking about buying them also and if I could see what I can fit in them that would be great!!

    Thank you! :)

  20. I love the office for two!My hubby and I are definetly going to need a system like this in our home. Right now we live in a tiny basement apartment (I mean tiny) and we have two desks in opposite corners of our living room. It would work much better if we had a space that faced each other like you have here. Maybe one day in the future we can do an upgrade to something like this. Thanks for the post

  21. I love your two desks. My husband and I shared an office in our apartment, but it was rather cramped. When we moved into our house, we chose to have separate offices. Now that we've lived here almost two years, we really missing having that shared space. Even when you're working quietly on different things, it's nice just to have that company. I also really love how bright and colorful your room is.

  22. Are those Billy bookcases on the wall above the windows? How did you mount them--just drilled through to studs, or on hanger bracket bars like upper cabinets? Love your posts! :)

    1. They are upper kitchen cabinets from ikea without the doors.
      Hope that helps
