Organic Latex Mattress Topper

I'm in love with a mattress topper . . .  We've only shared one week together but I'm in love already. And I don't know if I should tell you this, but . . . we slept together the first night :). hehe

In all seriousness our new mattress topper was delivered last week and it's been a dreamy week ;).
Here's the how, where, why and when of it all:
Our mattress is not that old, it's only about 5 years old . . . we just bought a standard firm mattress. We originally thought that a firm mattress would hold up to Lee's weight better then a soft mattress would. You see Lee is 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighs approx 250lbs, most of his 250lbs is in his chest and shoulders (Lee's always lifted weights as a hobby). Having such a handsome, and incredibly muscular husband (I'm so getting brownie points for that line), means that our mattresses get really saggy, really quick. Seriously if Lee's not in bed and I roll over I feel like I'm falling into a ditch (she exaggerated . . .  slightly). The firm mattress has held up okay, it's more of a small divot over there, as opposed to a ditch, but it's only been 5 years. We do rotate the mattress every 3 months or so but it's not really a 'fix'. Mostly we decided a new mattress was a necessity, not just a want, when Lee kept waking up exhausted with moderate back pain every morning.

So we started saving for a new mattress. Knowing more now then I did 5 years ago, I wanted to make sure it was a natural Latex mattress, with an organic wool or cotton topper. So we saved and we saved some more. After about 6 months I thought we'd have saved enough for a new mattress so I started checking around, I turned to Lee and said "well we can afford about half of a mattress" when it hit me, We can afford half a mattress . . . a mattress topper.
Honestly I was never too stoked about getting rid of our existing mattress, mattresses are a HUGE source of waste in North America and after all, our mattress was only 5 years old, it's not off gassing anymore, and it was clean (as you can see from our Mattress Vacuuming post) why not just top it.
So the hunt began for an organic latex mattress topper with an organic wool or cotton cover, we had a $500 budget, and I was adamant that it come with a cover, I wanted to be able to wash the cover and keep the latex topper itself as clean as possible!
Lots of Internet leg work and we found This one on Amazon.
It boasts:
  • Natural non blended latex topper made from eco-friendly botanical all natural components (rubber from rubber trees), with no toxic chemicals or synthetic or petroleum based fillers.
  • It is free from chemical additives.
  • ORGANIC COTTON SOFT COVER. This cover is removable for washing and is very comfortable, cool and hydrophillic for sweat free sleep.
  • Being all natural, it has long term health benefits.
  • Non Blended Latex mattresses can last upwards of 20 years.
  • *No Off Gassing*
  • Organic Latex Mattresses and Toppers are 300% more resistant to the growth of dust mites and allergens.
The Topper cost us $400 + tax, for our King Sized Bed! Which compared to the price of an entire organic latex mattress is a steal!
The main reasons we chose an organic latex mattress topper was to avoid the PBDE's (a flame retardant chemical) that are sprayed on to traditional mattresses. The European Union has banned the use of PBDEs but North America has yet to follow suit. The second reason being the off gassing of the memory foam mattresses, the gases have been proven pulmonary irritants and just plain aren't enjoyable to smell.

I figure if we're sleeping on it for 8 hours a night, every night, it should be as natural as possible.
This is the first of a few green and health conscious changes we're making to the bedroom! I've been working on a sewing project for the bedroom, I hope you'll check back tomorrow to see our next "green" (literally) change to the bedroom.
Lots of Love!!!

    1. And now the big question - has it sorted out Lee's back pain? I really want (need?) a new mattress, but like you, I can't bear the thought of throwing away something so huge and expensive in terms of both cash and resources. This might be just what I need! (Also, do your sheets still fit?). Thanks Ashli, I love this site more and more every day!

      1. He's been pain free this week so far, so I'm tempted to say Yes totally gone, but I'll give it another couple of weeks before I give a definitive YES it's gone answer!
But This last week he's had no back pain and we've both been sleeping through the night, and waking up with more energy!

    2. We bit the bullet a few years back after I suffered numerous sinus infections requiring high dose antibiotics, which then resulted in a c-dif infection (the worst!), that was resistant to only the strongest antibiotic prescribed for it ($1000 worth!,) I was diagnosed with a severe dust mite allergy! We purchased a latex mattress, organic cotton pillows, eventually took up the carpet and replaced with hardwoods. Not one COLD since! They are pricey, but so worth it. I will be getting a topper for our daughter to take with her to college in the fall. We purchased ours from a company in the Midwest, and they customize it based on spouses weight and sleep habits! Perfects. Oh, and no more ditch!

      1. What's the name/contact info/website of the company? My boyfriend and I are looking to upgrade from Queen to King and I'd like to get a great, green mattress as he has a severe dust allergy and I get back and hip pains. Thanks in advance for the info!!!!

    3. we have the ditch too and my husband always wakes up with back pain! we have a pillow top mattress though so i'm wondering if another topper on that would fit?! the sheets probably wouldn't fit over all that? i've been planning to sell my mattress but we too have only had it for 5 years and i think that's too soon to be replacing such an expense!

    5. I'm also wondering about Lee's back pain after sleeping on it for a week. My mattress has always been a little too soft for me and I was wondering if you think this would help firm it up a little.

      1. It's only been a week but so far so good. Lee hasn't had any back pain in the morning yet. I'll give it another couple weeks to make a definitive answer but for now I'll say so far so good!!!

      2. I'm curious if the topper dips too since you already have an exsisting dip. Our year old mattress has dips or "canoes" from where we sleep but I thought a topper would dip as well. I know its only been a week but I would love to know. My next mattress will be an organic latex that will cost me a fortune but hopefully last a long time.

    9. We spent crazy money six years ago to buy a solid core latex mattress, and were told it would last for at least 20 years... but the pillow top (foam) started getting impressions six months in and at six years now it's really bad!

BUT, we have looked into our warranty and it is still covered... so I spent today taking pictures of the 2" indents and such, and I'm hoping that we can get this mattress fixed up as good as new and better than before! I'm not sure what your warranty is, but it's worth looking into! Just something to think about. :)

      1. Thanks Rosa!!! Ours has a 5 year warranty. That's really too bad about your mattress, My girlfriends mattress sagged during their warranty but they claimed it was normal wear and tear and wouldn't cover it. Which is exactly why we didn't buy the natural latex one from Ikea, because they couldn't promise that any sagging would be covered.
I hope yours is, a 2 inch dip is HUGE!!!
        Lots of Luck!

    10. Hello,
Latex mattress toppers have a lot of different properties that are said to contribute to the overall health of any person using them.

      Thanks

      1. We haven't had that problem at all! I've heard that it doesn't breathe well but I also read that if your topper or mattress has small holes in it, like in our last picture, then it will breathe and won't make you overheat!
        Hope that helps!!!

    11. Ive read a bit that latex does not breath and can make things sweaty. Haveyou noticed this at all? We, like you, need a new mattress but the funds are not there for a whole new bed....

      1. Actually, the latex is know to breathe really well, it's one of the reasons we chose it! So far so good! We've had no icky sweat spots! ;)

    13. That's really informative posting about mattress! Anyway, do you know that which mattress is best to pair with the NORESUND bed frame from IKEA? It seems like thin mattresses don't go very well because the bed seems very low.. I don't know which mattress to choose. And also, what is a mattress base used for.
