Master Bedroom Fireplace!!!!

Some Like it HOT!!!!
This is hands down my Favorite Project EVER!!! BUT . . . there were some serious moments of question. When the frame went up I thought that the fireplace insert was way too BIG. Then when the boards went up on the frame I thought the whole thing was WAY too big. Then I thought maybe it was too rustic. Lee finally just said "I'll finish it and if you don't like it we can change it but lets see this through first" who knew Lee had more faith in my vision then I did?
I'm so glad I listened to him because I am in love with our new bedroom fireplace. He did an amazing job!
AAAAhhhhhh! So cute!!
It feels so cool to add a dream house element to our master bedroom. A fireplace has always been something I wanted in the bedroom. I'm so excited to knock it off of my Household "Bucket List".
It's also really useful, because our master bedroom has 3 exterior walls, making it a bit colder then the rest of the house, our new fireplace should help keep us nice and toasty this winter.
Here's how it looks with out the art:
 and with the art:
The picture we had hanging around from before we were married. An art store near our first apartment was having a going out of business sale and I picked up this framed print for $10!! I was 19 and it was my first piece of artwork that didn't get ripped out of a magazine. We used it in our first apartment, I don't think we used it in our townhouse (if I remember correctly it lived in our storage locker in the basement). We decided that if we couldn't find a spot for it in this house it had to go. I've been searching for a place to hang it . . . I think above the fireplace is PERFECT!
The chair in the corner adds some serious softening to all of the hard lines of the fireplace! I always thought that the chair was too big for our bedroom, but now it looks like it's the right scale . . . I think anything less would have seemed teeny tiny! I love it when a plan comes together and other issues like under scaled chairs fall in line! ;)
I'm thrilled with how it all came together.

Now for COST . . . we went over budget. I was being, some might say "overly optimistic" when I declared our first budget of $150 (have you seen how much wood costs ? ? !! haha).

Here's our Budget Breakdown:
Electric Fireplace insert - $40 off Craigslist. It had a broken fan, Lee fixed it, saving us over $100.
Framing 2x4's  -  $ 35
Facing boards 1x6's  - $72
Corner Trim - $12
Bottom Baseboard trim 7 1/2" tall - $8
Quarter Round trim around baseboard - $5
Trim around Top 3" baseboard - $2.60
Trim along wall - $7.80
Kilz No VOC primer- Free
After we primed the boards we only needed a tester pot of paint! At $4 we bought Martha Stewart's HEAVY CREAM, it was a really close match to the Ikea wardrobe beside it! It was a HUGE bonus that we only had to buy a tester pot!
Misc Nails and Screw  $5
_______________________________________________________________________
Total Cost:  $191.40
We came in $41.40 over budget . . . But this is our new view from bed:
Definitely worth the extra $41.40!!!
One last look :)
I hope you like it as much as we do!

Lee's working on a great HOW TO for later this week! It will have all the nitty gritty details, step by step!!

  2. Totally fabulous. I can't get over how it changed the look of the room. So custom. And the planking, swoon!

BTW, I took your advice and ended up doing a board and batten treatment on my bedroom wall. Remember how I had yours as inspiration. Well, it's not the same, but the wood treatment adds such a cottage vibe, I love it. I'll be sharing this week.

  6. Incredible! That room is magazine worthy!!! The print is perfect for above the fireplace. I could spend hours in that room.

  7. For under $200!?!?! That's incredible! I wouldn't have thought one could add a custom fireplace to a bedroom for anything under a couple thousand!

I've ALWAYS wanted a fireplace in the bedroom as well. Hmmm, not sure if I even have the space in my room.

  8. Wow, Ashli! I'd love the fireplace if only because it looks great, but the fact that you and Lee did this yourselves, and at such a low cost, is so impressive. This definitely surpasses my previous favorite project of yours, the built-in Billy bookcase in your library.

  9. Beautiful! I was wondering what artwork you were going to put above the fireplace. So cozy... I can see Max jumping up in the chair for a nap.

  18. I love, love, love, love this! We are planning to do something similar to our fireplace and now seeing it actually done, has made me really want to get my "clad" on. Cheers for the inspiration Ashley! We will let you know how we get on...

  20. OK, I love the fireplace, but I NEED that chair and ottoman! Are they from IKEA? Our bedroom will need much more than $191.40 as pretty everything is original from the 1970s when the house was built! I do not like the wallpaper and matching drapes, I do not like the grass wallpaper (although it's coming back in vogue, ours is all torn off around light switches!), the carpet is WORN, WORN, WORN! AND I have water damage on the ceiling -- we need a new roof! But that chair is perfect!

    1. The chair is from Ikea. It's their Ektorp Chair in White. Super cheap at $250.
      It's HUGE and really comfy.
      Hope that helps!

  21. This turned out amazing! My house is tiny so I can't help but think how you could install secret storage behind the top part..maybe a secret door on the side or a jewelry safe behind the framed art.

  22. Honestly Ashli you have the BEST projects out of a lot of what is out there. You and Lee's taste is impeccable, your results blow me away and your budget is unheard of. I am so happy for you guys. Your hard work certainly paid off and you deserve to warm your tootsies by that fabulous fire. Your bedroom looks very cozy!!!!

  23. Oh my word, I LOVE it! So charming, peaceful, relaxing and lovely! I would never want to get out of bed. Ever.

  24. Hold on a moment...let me wipe that drool off my chin... :) So incredibly envious! I've always wanted a fireplace in my bedroom...

  25. Wow, Ashli, that looks fantastic! And sooooo cozy. Isn't it the best when husbands know to follow through with something even when there's doubt? :) Hope you've been having fun snuggling in that new haven.

  26. Ashli it looks amazing...what kind/color of paint did you find to match "Ikea" white? We have a few things to paint too to match our billy bookcases...

    1. That is a good question.....

    2. It's not a perfect match to our Ikea Wardrobes, but it's pretty darn close. We used Martha Stewart's HEAVY CREAM! I'm not sure if it matches all ikea white but it's very close to our Bonte Wardrobes from Ikea!
      Hope that helps !

  27. Looks great, Ashli! The whole room looks cozy and soft and inviting! It would cost you at least 2 grand to do it with the contractor/carpenter.
    Congratulations!

  28. That is so beautiful AND it looks perfect - as if the bedroom was originally planned that way.

The colors are perfect and soothing. Super cozy! (Are you kind of excited for winter? LOL)

    Love it!

  29. This room is stunning! Your whole house is so gorgeous! You are both so talented. Just a thought...would it change the overlook you want if you removed the footboard from the bed? This way you would have nothng blocking that gorgeous view!

  30. Wow! The fireplace turned out amazing and for under $200?! Well done! I had the same thought regarding a bed with no footboard blocking the view. Enjoy!

  31. I am in awe! You do so many great things to take the "builder look" out of a house and to make it look unique. Would you mind telling me what color of paint you used in your master bedroom on the walls? I have brought home a ga-trillion paint chips from our local home improvement stores, but I am more lost than ever. Your wallcolor looks just great. Thank you!

    1. Hi Iris!
      Thank you so much!!!
We used Martha Stewart's MOURNING DOVE! Paint on our walls. It's the same color as our mainfloor. I loved it so much I basically painted 90% of the house the same color! I'm so glad you like it too!
      Hope that helps

  34. This is GORGEOUS! I love everything about it. I would love to curl up on that chair while sitting fireside.

I'm blown away by how little it cost you. It certainly pays to know how to do things for yourself! Come down to Seattle & teach me and my husband! ;)

  36. WOW, Lee is pretty talented! This turned out so great! Did you do a sketch before-hand? or just 'wing' it? ;) How long did it end up taking for this project?

    1. Thanks!!!
We did a little doodle on a napkin at the pub one night, I'd still consider that winging it!! haha
We'll go into depth about time lines in our How To post but it took Lee about 1 full day and 2 half days!
      Hope that helps!

  40. This looks amazing! At first I was really thinking you should have mounted the fireplace higher so you could see if from bed, but I see now that with your footboard it actually works out beautifully! I'm glad Lee encouraged you to put the whole thing together first! :-) It looks outstanding! ~Michelle.
