Barn Door Progress: Paint Color

First THANK YOU for all the comments from Yesterday. I was really nervous about changing so much! Especially the name! You are all so sweet and it made me feel a lot better about the whole thing :) THANK YOU!!!!

Now all the mushy stuff is out of the way:
Lee finished the Barn Door Construction this weekend!!!! And I'm in LOVE (with Lee and the door). He did an amazing Job on it. It's rustic but re-fined. It's a bit hard to see the details when it's just raw wood, so we need to paint this bad boy up!

This is where I need some HELP!
We're deciding on paint colors. Everyone seems to have a different opinion. So we need your input.

Here's my thinking:
First I was thinking Green because it matches the green in the living room. BUT, I already have green in the living room so maybe we want a different color for the dining room. I've been struggling with accent color choices for a while now, too much green everywhere . . . but I do LOVE green ? ? ? ?
Blue would match some of the blue from the living room (in the stars and in the pillow stripes).
And Yellow . . . I just plain LOVE yellow and have been trying to find a way to work it into our house for a while.
Here are the choices:

All choices are made Martha Stewart Paints:
1. Rain Water
2. Beach Grass
3. Calabash
4. Cornbread
5. Egg Yolk
And Last a Bonus color choice . . . from my mom . . . Cream, the same cream color as the trim.

So what do you think??

  1. It looks great! I'd go with cream. I feel like a coloured door would look weird in that room. But I am by no means a designer!

  2. Your mom is going to LOVE me...I am leaning in her direction with a twist. While I LOVE all the other color choices, other than the blue, most compete with your wall color in my opinion. I too love the rustic look of the door, all the knots and such...so I'm thinking cream and distressed a bit, or even a stain so that the little details show through.

  3. I'm thinking blue but I think I love blue about like you love yellow! So with that in mind maybe you should just paint it yellow :)

  4. I would pick #1 Rain Water - I think it would be the perfect contrast!

  5. I think the yellow would look great! Nice and cheery, it'll stand out but not smack you in the face. Yellow :)

  6. I love the Yellow #4 but I think your mom may be right about doing it the trim color. It'll still stand out enough because it's so unique and GORGEOUS. Is Lee going to tell us how to make one ourselves?

  7. My vote is for the cream because of the door's uniqueness. It might be the only thing you see in the dining room if it's painted another color.

  8. I have a similar door between my kitchen and laundry room that I plan to paint a yellow, something like your eggyolk. So naturally, I vote for that, unless I don't want you house to look like my house, and then I'd go for blue. Then again, they say blue is an appetite suppressor...

And something I didn't notice yesterday, I can't see your date at all, unless I highlight it.

  9. I originally thought of the yellow - that would be such a fun punch of color against the walls. But the cream is a good option as well.

  10. I think mom is right, cream would be gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  11. My vote is for #4 ("Cornbread"). If you love a color, like yellow, what better excuse to use it? And of course, if you hate it you can just paint over it again. Good luck!

  12. I would be safe (and boring) and paint it cream to match all the trim. But wow that #1 blue rain color is singing to me! So so pretty. All the searching and work to get that fancy barn door - almost a shame to "hide" it amongst the trim...

  13. I love the cornbread color by martha, I've been trying to find just the right place to work that into my house. I have to say though...I think all the colors are beautiful, but I'm having a hard time "seeing" them in the space. I'd probably stain that bad boy dark to match your table, or paint it cream to match the trim. Whatever you decide, I'm sure will look great.

Oooh I'm so jealous of girls whose husbands make them barn doors (off to casually show the pics to my hubby!!)

  14. My vote would be for the yellow because I LOVE color and yellow is so cheery and fun. =)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Distressed cream I think. Though I am a sucker for a soft yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I vote for the same color as the trim. The door is unique enough that it doesn't need a contrasting color to stand out.

  17. Also just linked my blog to your amazing mudroom redo in the old manor. I know it's old but it still gets me! Hope you don't mind!

  18. OOO I like #2 I looove green...if I had to pick one other it would be #5 I have also been trying to add more yellow in my house ..it's like sunshine! BTW I really like the new blog look very cute I just had a blog makeover too 8)

  19. tough choice... #4 cornbread would be a nice bold choice, but I always seem to play it safe and would opt for cream BUT distress it.

lovin' the new look... I think a "g" from "blogging" got missed in your ABOUT ME section.

  20. LOVE the blue (#1)!! The door looks awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Definitely cream in my opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  22. If your walls were a bolder color, I'd say go with the cream. But since they are so neutral... my vote is for color. That's what you were first drawn to when you started researching barn doors... so go with it! IMO... color will make the details of the door stand out and really accent whatever hardware Lee ends up making.

My first choice is Rainwater. Second choice is Egg Yolk.

If you don't like it... you can always repaint it! ;)

  23. Rain Water or the color of trim

    ReplyDelete
  24. I Like #1- Rainwater or cream like the trim- I'm just not a fan of yellow for decorating personally- But that's just me. Your home is lovely & I'm sure whatever colour you choose will look wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just looking at the color cards, I like #2. But, I don't know how it will look with your wall color. I LOVE yellow....I just did my dining room in yellow.

Maybe pick 3 colors you like and get a little sample so that you can paint them on the door to see which one you like better :)

  26. Jen just painted the inside of her door aqua....and I love it.

  27. Staining might be lovely as your kitchen cabs, the stairwell and your table all have a bit of dark wood but maybe too rustic for the look you're heading too. Initially I'd say to hit it with a punch of color (the blue more so than the green or yellow as the latter two seem to blend too much with the wall color) but the pic on your pinterest board with the white door, white trim is lovely so maybe mom is right? I think when the hardware is in place (will it be black?) it will change the entire look of the door from what is pictured so keep that in mind when you make your final choice! Good luck - no matter which way you go, I don't think you could make the wrong choice as it is a lovely door!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think either Beach Grass or Calabash would look great. You need a pop of color with everything else being so neutral. It will look great!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am kind of leaning with the others and your mom. I like the cream the best. Someone suggested distressing it as well. I like that idea. And if you add hardware to it!! But, if I had to choose a color, I like the blue or green the best. I think they look the best with your wall color.

    ReplyDelete
  30. #2!!! beach grass! Or any of the colors, really.

I think the cream of the trim would look great but if you try that first, you may never get brave and repaint it something bright. But, if you go with a fun color first, you always have the cream to fall back on.

    Go bold, baby!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hands down #4, Cornbread.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What about staining it, instead of painting?

    ReplyDelete
  33. from what I see most want to played it safe. I love #2 I think is a beautiful green and it will add a pop of color for the room.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm with your mom, cream!!! eeek. I love colour but I'm just not sure that is the place for it!! Bring in some yellow vases or cushions. I think cream will look fabulous!! Happy choosing -- whatever you decide will look great -- all of your other decorating is, so why would this be any different???!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Another vote for cream.
The door looks fantastic...tells hubs we are all very impressed! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I vote for cream!

Any color might actually take away from the overall look of the room. The room might scream "door."

The cream will actually make the door stand out more than using color.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would go for #1 or #4

The room has a lot of neutral colors and I feel cream would be nice, but that's just it. You should want Lee's hard work to stand out!

Maybe then introduce the same color in a few accents so the color is balanced in the dining room and not standing alone (excuse the pun).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cream or Beach Grass!

    ReplyDelete
  39. What about staining it????

    ReplyDelete
  40. Change it up a bit #5 yellow would look great :O)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm with mom. :-) Cream - high gloss would be a nice contrast with the rustic style.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Have you considered a natural look? Maybe a rustic looking deck stain?

    ReplyDelete
  43. The first blue color for sure. It's subtle yet brings in some of the accents in nearby rooms. The yellow would look amazing, but also might look odd since it would be alone. Cream would look great, but I love the idea of a little color to make you smile just that much bigger! Can't wait to see how it turns out though, I am sure it will be amazing no matter what!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  44. Either of the greens or cream! Wow, cudos to Lee!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Is rain water a grey-blue? If so, that's my pick! But then my safe side says cream...and distressed a tad. What a great job Lee has done! I cannot wait to see this finished and with hardware to dress it up!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love all of the knots too! I would stain it or go with cream and distress it. The natural wood knots have so much character.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would say number 4 or the cream like your Mom suggests. It's a beautiful door!! Love it, love your new looks!

    ReplyDelete
  48. If you want the wood grain to show thru....how about using color stain? I had NO idea this existed until I saw it here:

    http://ninered.blogspot.com/2011/10/bamboo-sofa-table.html

I am currently doing a buffet with this and it's so easy and quick drying. It shows the wood grain thru the color. I got mine at Home Depot. =)

  49. I think too many greens....... I was going to say white because of your trim, but at the bottom of the post you said it's cream. CREAM definately......and you want to make sure you notice it. Your walls are fairly specific so I would go with cream. Would not introduce another green into the mix. Love the door. Of course your old house was MM and you need a new name for this place so I say, go with it. I did like the photo of the legs with the dog...very stepford wife-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree with the others who said to go rustic. I would do a wash in the cream colour and distress it a bit. I just think painting over the wonderful knotty wood would take away from the "barnishness" of your barn door!

    ReplyDelete
  51. So this might be a little crazy but....how about painting the door cream, the trim around the door blue and the piece that goes across the door green??? I think that would look amazing.... Conversely, the door blue, the trim around the door and the piece that goes across cream??

    ReplyDelete
  52. I say #4 for sho'.

However, I will not argue with the lovely peeps who suggested a distressed cream color. I can see that, too.

However, again, I know that the rest of your house is light, I think that room could handle the Cornbread (yummo!)

Paint it already, Ashli! I can't wait to see it!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I like the Rain Water color best. I'd probably put a dark brown glaze over to give it an antiqued look to give an overall rustic/sophisticated look.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think you should paint the trim around the door and the crossbar the same colour as your wall trim. I would then paint each board a colour matching the stripes in your living room cushions blue and green with the addition of either the yellow or cream to break it up.

    ReplyDelete
  55. You should use the yellow if you love yellow! And that way it won't be too matchy matchy with your other things...Unless you like it all matching, & in that case, go with green or blue. ;)

  56. I think this one would look good- 3. Calabash

What color is on the walls?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with your mom-
Cream, the same cream color as the trim.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My vote is cream like your trim, but I think you should distress it with some stain over the top to make it look like a well used, well loved barn door! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I vote for cream, the same as the trim.

  60. I love #1 RainWater. It is in the same palette as the rest of the colors in your house but still gives a little punch!! Beautiful door!

I hate to say it but I think boring cream would look best in this space. Putting color on the door would be too much color here. You are good at putting spots of color perfectly around your house.

    ReplyDelete
  62. If you are hankering for a colour then i would choose the Rain water in a distressed finish, if you feel its too much when painted you can always add a white wash over it to subdue the colour.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I would stain, then clear it. I love an organic look though. Otherwise, I'd paint it to match the trim for a nice clean look. No color because the door pops on character alone. The room looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thank you so much for all the input, although I might be more confused now then I was before I asked the question.
To answer MYBOOKCLUB, the color on the walls is Martha Stewart's Mourning Dove!! :)
    Hope that helps

  65. I am going with what my eye was drawn to- #2.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Love it! I'd definitely go with Cornbread or Egg Yolk but leaning more towards Cornbread. :-) Bring in the yellow!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Love the door! I'm a big fan of color, but I think cream would be the most elegant choice.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Rain water, all the wayyy! It's so pretty and I think it'll compliment all your green!
Also, love all the changes you've made to the blog, just didn't get to comment the other day!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I go along with your Mom on the door paint color. I think your cream color trim would be awesome. It would make the door pop.

    ReplyDelete
  70. ooh. yellow would definitely be a fun pop and you could distress it some to keep the rustic feel. if you chicken out, the cream (distressed of course) would be beautiful as well. There's my two sense. I can't wait to see what you decide. I love the change-up on the blog too.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I would personally go with a slightly darker (or lighter) cream than the trim so it doesn't blend, but still flows, and then blacken some of it and distress it. I think those other colours might compete with the wall colour too much.
