My Favorite Cookbooks

"Hi my name is Ashli and I'm a Cookbook - a - holic"

I received an email from a very sweet reader asking me to do a post on COOKBOOKS, specifically the cookbooks I have in the kitchen . . . and I've got a lot of cookbooks in the kitchen. Here's some of my favorites:

First is Sandi Richard's Dinner survival . . . try the ginger lime chicken (amazing!). We've been using her cookbooks for years . . . she has super simple, easy, full of flavor recipes, as well as meal plans and shopping lists :)

Next would be Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. Always a favorite of mine! It has great down home recipes, organized by meal (love that). I'm also loving the little extras that come with the book, like the cute apron stencil and some very easy crafts.

Ratio is a neat little book . . . no pictures though. It's based on simple baking and cooking principals that can be applied to any recipe. It gives the ratios for sausage, vinaigrette, pie crust and tons more. I thought it was super interesting, I didn't know that all recipes had a basic equation behind them :) And I would buy the book just for the Chicken Sausage recipe alone!!!!

Everyday Food . . . my go to cookbook!! Easy, simple recipes that taste great and don't take long to prepare. Also, all the ingredients are either pantry staples or easily found at the grocery store! And I LOVE it when cookbooks are organized by season :)

Recently I've been on a bit of a freezer cooking kick and I can thank this book . . . CAN I FREEZE THIS? I loved this book, some great freezer cooking recipes, and some great tips and tricks for freezing food!! And I LOVE the photos of organized freezers :) (I'm so shallow)
Another simple cookbook . . . Best Recipes Ever . . . this is also a great T.V. show here in Canada!!
Great recipes for weeknight and weekend cooking.

And last if your in an ethnic mood there's Vij's. Vij's is the locally famous Indian restaurant here in Vancouver, every Friday and Saturday night there is a line up out the door. Try the Family Chicken Curry recipe it's Ah-Mazing!!!

So there are my picks!!! If you have a second let me know what your favorite cookbooks are . . . I'm always looking for more cookbooks ;)

Check out The Yellow Farmhouse Cookbook: http://www.amazon.com/Yellow-Farmhouse-Cookbook-Christopher-Kimball/dp/0316496995/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318245604&sr=8-1-spell

Amazing recipes, true to their original form: classics. Christopher Kimball writes this book with much anecdote and interesting commentary. Its a cookbook you can sit down and read like a novel on a Saturday afternoon. I highly recommend it.

I collect cookbooks ... just don't use them as often as I should! Just out of curiosity, how often do you browse through them or use recipes from different cookbooks? I've had a recent life change and think perhaps this would be a way for a new beginning.

I'm in love with cookbooks too! Great recommendations! Currently I'm loving the 2 barefoot contessa books I have (back to basics is a must have!) and around my French table by Doeie Greenspan. Her soups are delicious (and freeze well) plus the gougère recipe was a hit at thanksgiving yesterday! Hope you and your family have a happy thanksgiving

I love cookbooks too! I think my favorite one is one that belonged to my grandmother. It has some of her recipes that she made a lot and of course is just very sentimental to me. I feel connected to her when I make a recipe from it.

I collect cookbooks too, but I have to admit that other than Everyday Food, I haven't heard of the others. But I will certainly check them out!! My favs are the Southern Living annual cookbooks and all of Ina Garten's cookbooks.

I second Everyday Food (both volumes and the small magazine.) Consistently excellent recipes time and time again. Always.

Gotta love that Martha!

Alice Waters' Art of Simple Food is my go-to. It stays in the cookbook holder on the counter. I love the simple, non-fussy, recipes with fresh food.

The Canadian Living cookbooks are great! We are vegetarians and their Vegetarian Collection cookbook is fantastic. Even for those who aren't vegetarian and just want more choices, it's great.

I second the "Yellow Farmhouse" suggestion. I picked it up for a quarter at a yardsale this summer and it is an absolute treasure. I also like Nigella's "How to be a Domestic Godess." I'm going to have to check out "Ratio"... I'm such a math geek!

The cook book that has the most dirty pages at my house is The Five Roses Cook book... then the next one it used to be a hard cover book is The Good Housekeeping Cook Book.My children are grown now, but we sould spend hours looking through all the cook books and trying new recipes. We had had so many laughs over the not what we thought it would be and then the OH WOW that was great. All 3 of my kids remember that book with such happiness and joy and together time with Mom. My recipe books are my novels and I have passed this on to my chldren,

My 2 "go to" cookbooks are Joy of Cooking and Fanny Farmer. Also, I love using Cooking Light magazine. Almost all of our favorite recipes are from Cooking Light.

I love browsing through The Silver Spoon (and it looks great on the shelf) but for actual cooking I'm a huge fan of my trusty BHG cookbook. I also love vintage cookbooks that give advice to housewives on "freshening up" before the hubs comes home! And I have to agree with my friends above, Everyday Food is good stuff.

"The Best 30 minute meals" or something like that, by Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen. I also really like their "ATK Family Cookbook" and "family baking book". both currently at costco too!

King Arthur Flour's baking book is a huge book and a wealth of information on baking. For cookies, surprisingly, "400 sensational cookies" has a lot of wonderful recipes. Never been let down by a cookie from that book yet~

I'm also a fan of any Canadian Living cookbook. I have several plus an archive of their holiday baking magazines. I also like Michael Smith's "The Best of Chef at Home". He has a newer one out that I wanted to pick up at Costco.
