Spring=New Sheets

I love white sheets, sadly they don't love my husband :) After one short year, lets just say they aren't so white anymore. But It's not the end of the world, usually the top sheet is in good condition so I can use it for a future quilting project. And the fitted sheet and pillow cases get cut up to be used as rags in the garage (we try re-use as much as possible around here).
Long Story short, off to Target to buy another set of Organic White Cotton Sheets. If you've been following this blog for a while you would have caught our last spring post about these sheets. I can't stop singing their praises. Organic Sheet Set for . . . .$44.99 for a King Size set WOW! I went to a specialty bedding store last month, I couldn't buy an organic pillowcase for that price! They're soft (Make sure to throw a bit of white vinegar into the machine, to naturally soften 'em up), they're affordable and they're simple, no fancy embroidery or pattern just simple plain white sheets. In case you can't tell I'm a HUGE fan!
Here are some of the benefits organic sheets offer:
-Organic Cotton is farmed without chemicals and pesticides that are harmful to the environment and your health
-Organic cotton fibers provide greater comfort then man made fabrics that do not breathe
-Organic Cotton absorbs moisture better then polyester bedding, therefore preventing Night sweats, athlete's foot and other fungal infections.
-Organic bedding is Hypo-allergetic
-The cotton fibers are stronger then commerically grown cotton fibers
-Organic Cotton is safer for cotton farmers health and the health of their families

Spring Cleaning: Time again to Vacuum the Mattress!
Warning, if you're squeamish you might want to skip this part. haha
I can't believe I'm sharing this AGAIN for the second time, frankly I can't believe I shared it the first time. Vacuuming the mattress is VERY important, you hear a lot about flipping and rotating it but not a lot about vacuuming it.
Preferably you'll be doing this with a spinning brush, but If you don't have one an upholstery attachment will do.

This is the part I can't believe I'm sharing, but hey, all for the greater good . . .  right?
This is what comes out! and we do this every six months!

We use the Dyson Animal Vacuum, It has a rotating brush attachment which gets the maximum amount out, I've done it with the upholstery attachment and got less, but It still worked~!

So there you have it, I'm going to die of embarrassment now :) haha

  4. wow...thanks for sharing. we def need to do this. Ive actually been trying to get my husband to agree to buy a new mattress and upgrade to a king. Recently we heard on the radio that your mattress can double in size in 8 years from dust mites...ew! But then my husband asked - how does that happen when you have a sheat on your bed and you wash the sheats. How does it get on your mattress. Any ideas? Maybe ill share this post with him to convince him we should just buy a new one :-)

It has been a blessing with my severe dust mite allergy. We purchased a custom latex mattress a few years ago due to my allergies, it has made such a difference! My girl's get vaccumed, but we also keep theirs in cases as well.

  11. I LUUUVVV white organic sheets. I got hooked on white sheets a few years ago, when I found a set of organic sheets at TJ Maxx for cheap and thought I want to try organic. Once I had the white sheets on, wow, it was that hotel feeling, crisp clean, add organic to that and oh so nice.

  12. I love white sheets too..... I am more after the thread count to make them soft.... what is the difference in organic sheets can you tell me? I am loving your spring cleaning tips (even though in Australia we are in Autumn heading to winter). Yesterday when I got home from doing the groceries I spent 30 mins washing and cutting and chopping lettuce, carrott, capsicum, pineapple and watermelon and had it all ready in the fridge so no washing the lettuce every single time I want to use some as it's all done. I am loving your tips, and I know you are so passionate about what you do and get a kick out of sharing your ideas. Thanks Kathy, Brisbane, Australia

  17. Embarrassed?! WHAT?! You just did the world a service. I have never even THOUGH to vacuum my mattress. YES, another chore to add to the kids' list!! Thanks!!!

  18. Wait - Question... When you put the vinegar in - do you still use laundry detergent & bleach (silly question?). Break it down for us!! ;)

  19. This is good timing! I'm going on a much needed Target run soon and will be picking up some of these!!

  20. I'm planning on a post on the subject soon but to answer your question:
You put the vinegar in as a fabric softener substitute. So you still put in your detergent. If you have a front loader washing machine, you can put the vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser, or if you have a front load washing machine you can put the vinegar in a downy ball, or add it just before the last rinse cycle.
You'll need about a 1/4 cup per load!
    Hope that helps :)

  21. I just found your blog yesterday and have been making my way through all your posts, heaven! Just want to say that I, too, only have 2 sets of sheets and they are both the white organic cotton target sheets. Love them! Such a good price and they wash great. Being a single gal who sleeps on the edge of my queen size bed, I flip my mattress monthly to avoid a slump on one side but I definitely need to vacuum it next time. Is it weird that I can't wait to see what comes out to gross myself out? Love, love your blog and that it's Canadian too (I live in Toronto) so all your sources are ones I can hit up too! Homesense is ADDICTIVE!!
